Clubs & Activities

Students are often looking for ways to get involved in activities before or after school. Clubs and teams provide opportunities for our students to try new activities, spend more time doing something they enjoy, and interacting with groups of students they might not meet otherwise. Find out more about the clubs and teams at Blackburn using the tabs below.

Get involved. Have fun!

  • What is Battle of the Books?

Students on the team read books from a list established by the state Battle of the Books committee and then compete in quiz-bowl-style tournaments to test their knowledge of these books. The team meets each week after school to practice for the countywide competition in March. The students will practice through games, mock battles, joint practices with other schools in our area, and book discussions.

    Membership:

Elementary Battle of the Books is open to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Students must be able to stay after school for practice. Team members will read all 16 chapter books on the state list, memorize the titles and authors, and participate in discussions to answer questions about the books. Students work together as a team to answer questions at the competition.

  • About Math Counts: The Math Counts Team focuses on preparing students for problem-solving with challenging math questions and word problems, covering concepts typical of 6th and 7th-grade levels. Students practice in a supportive, team-oriented environment to enhance their mathematical reasoning, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.

Who can participate: Fifth and Sixth grade students must tryout for the team. During tryouts students complete a math assessment. The students with the six highest scores are selected as our finalists, and the next two highest scores are chosen as alternates.

    Meeting Details:

    • Practices: Each Monday that school is in session

    • Meeting Time: Wednesdays from 3:20 - 4:15PM

    • Location: Mrs. Cadle's Classroom

Commitment and Goals: Team members are encouraged to attend regularly, as consistent practice will help them build confidence and prepare effectively for the competition. We aim to create a fun, engaging environment where students can deepen their love for math and develop essential problem-solving skills.
